Tatyana Garrett went missing last fall and appeared at a family residence at 6 a.m. Oct. 22, 2021. She did not return with her daughter, Leilani.
Leilani’s grandmother found the baby unresponsive in the garage and called 911. Paramedics transported Leilani to a nearby hospital, but she did not display signs of life.
The death investigation remained open pending determination from the Cook County Medical Examiner. The child had carbon monoxide and melatonin in her system, according to its toxicology report.
The Cook County States Attorney’s office reviewed the evidence and approved a charge of First-Degree Murder on April 8. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Garrett is being held without bond.
